Here are some tips for students walking to and from school

  • Pay attention to all traffic signals and/or the crossing guard – never cross the street against a light, even if you don’t see any traffic coming.
  • Always walk on the sidewalk (where provided), otherwise walk facing traffic.
  • Walk with a friend(s).
  • Wear reflective material. It makes you more visible to street traffic.
  • Never run out from between cars.

Tips for drivers

  • Be mindful of students and drive with caution in school zones.
  • Watch for school buses picking up and discharging students.
  • Allow extra time for your morning commute.
  • Be mindful of added traffic around schools.
  • Be aware of extra pedestrian traffic.
  • Yield to students or pedestrians in crosswalks.

In addition to increased presence at schools, drivers can also expect heightened traffic enforcement in school zones.
