After losing two out of the first three games to start the season in defense of their Group V State Championship, it appeared the wheels were in danger of coming off of the 2013 football season for South Brunswick High School.
Instead, the Vikings responded with the heart of a champion, winning their fourth straight Friday game night by besting Middletown North 28-21 in a tougher than expected contest. Once again, it was the big play explosiveness of junior Dontae Strickland that powered the Vikings to victory.
Strickland scored on a 66-yard run and a 75-yard kickoff return to pave the way for the Vikings. SBHS trailed 7-0 in the second quarter to 1-5 Middletown when Strickland answered by taking the ensuing kickoff to the house.
The tough Middletown squad would even the score at 14 in the third quarter, but quarterback Amir Johnson took over with scoring runs of 9 and 30 yards to give the lead to SBHS. Middletown would make it tight late in the fourth coming within one touchdown, but running back Dahrae Ford converted a fourth and one run to give SBHS the win.
Strickland would finish with 96 yards on 12 carries, while Johnson ran for 69 yards on 16 carries and Ford rushed for 62 yards on 12 carries. Rashaan Baker, Zaire Gibson, Matt Golden, Marcus Jackson, Anthony Milicevic and Skyler Sciandra helped power the Vikings defense in the win.
SBHS will look for its fifth win in a row on Friday as the Vikings hit the road for a showdown at Central Jersey powerhouse Sayreville High School in a key GMC Red Division battle, with both teams sitting with 5-2 records.
