Car Hit By Train Thanksgiving Eve In South Brunswick
The woman thought she was stopped before the tracks, but she was stopped on the tracks. The impact pushed her car for a quarter mile.
SOUTH BRUNSWICK, NJ — An 82-year-old woman driving a car was hit by a freight train Wednesday afternoon in South Brunswick, but police say she survived the incident.
The collision happened at 3:05 p.m. on the train tracks at Rt. 535 (Cranbury - South River Road) near Stults Road.
The woman said she was driving and saw the flashing train lights, and she stopped the car.

She believed she had stopped before the train tracks, but she was actually on the tracks, said police. The Conrail freight train struck her vehicle and pushed it a quarter mile down the tracks. The woman suffered a minor leg injury and was transported to an area hospital.
Rt. 535 was closed for two hours as crews worked to clear the car from the tracks.

Separately, a South Brunswick woman was killed in a car accident that also occurred Wednesday afternoon in South Brunswick Township. That was a three-vehicle crash that occurred at 4:24 p.m. on New Road between Rt. 522 and Rt. 1.
One driver, a 61-year-old Township woman, died at the hospital at 10:19 pm.
The Middlesex County Prosecutors Office and South Brunswick Police Traffic Safety Bureau are investigating the crash. Additional information will be released later.
"We extend our heartfelt sorrow to the family and friends of the resident who passed away. We will continue to work with the prosecutor's office to investigate all the details," said South Brunswick Police Chief Raymond Hayducka.
