Drunk Driver Assaulted Officers: South Orange Police
Roland Lyles was charged with resisting arrest, police said.
SOUTH ORANGE, NJ - A 30-year-old drunk driver found asleep at the wheel awoke and attacked officers on July 3, according to the South Orange Police Department.
According to authorities, Rolan Lyles of East Orange was found by police asleep behind the wheel of a car stopped at the intersection of Valley Street and South Orange Avenue with the green signal shortly before 4 a.m.
Officers approached the vehicle and found the driver and passenger sound asleep and the driver, Lyles, had the car in drive and his foot on the brake, police said.

The officer was able to put the car in park and awaken Lyles to exit the vehicle, police said. Once he was told he was under arrest for suspicion of DWI, Lyles attempted to get back in the car and became combative with the officers on scene and was ultimately arrested and transported to South Orange PD, police said.
Lyles was charged with DWI, aggravated assault on a police officer and resisting arrest, police said.
