Union County, Local Businesses Offer Free Oral Cancer Screening

In an attempt to promote the early detection of oral cancer, Union County’s Office of Health Management through the Chronic Disease Coalition of Middlesex and Union Counties are partnering with local townships and businesses to offer free oral cancer screenings

Union County is partnering with the Clark Township Health Department, Clark ShopRite and Cranford Township dentist, Dr. Kurt M. Krause of Krause Dental Care, according to a release from the County of Union.

The free oral cancer screening will take place at the Clark ShopRite, located at 76 Central Ave. in Clark, on Saturday, May 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. All participants will will qualify to enter a drawing for a door prize courtesy of the Clark Health Department.

“I’d like to thank all our partners involved in this screening for raising public awareness about reducing oral cancer risks,” Union County Freeholder Chairman Mohamed S. Jalloh said in a release from the county. “Oral cancer screenings can save lives and are an effective means of cancer detection at an early, highly curable stage.”

More than 43,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with oral cancer each year, the release said. According to the County of Union, one person will die from oral cancer every hour of every day, and more than 115 new cases are diagnosed each day.

Early detection increases survival rates. Oral cancer screenings are an effective means to detecting cancer at its early, curable stages.
