Christmas Eve Services at New Providence Presbyterian Church

Rolling Stone magazine describes his sound as “John Prine fronting the Heartbreakers.” The recent “Sit Down &amp; Stand Up” Tour was a one man show that opened to rave reviews from fans and critics alike. A mix of music, humor and storytelling, each performance paints a unique canvas that covers the full spectrum of human emotions. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, and you’ll go home with a full heart.

The Joe Cirotti Trio, a seasoned string band from Northwest New Jersey’s Appalachian ridge, blends American folk, jazz, country, and bluegrass with modern flair. Formed in 2015, the trio—Joe Cirotti (guitar), Pete Lister (upright bass), and Timmy Coyle (mandolin, guitar)—crafts a sound rooted in tradition and blue-collar passion. Often joined by founding member Mike Alexander and others on banjo, fiddle, or percussion, they’re a fixture at top regional venues. Influenced by artists from Doc Watson to Django Reinhardt and Pink Floyd, their debut album Joe Cirotti Trio (2023) showcases their unique fusion of Americana, bluegrass, and gypsy jazz. 
Over the course of a prolific 40+ year career, 32 releases and 17 solo albums, Rees Shad has crafted music that is both poignant and profound. He is dedicated to crafting short story songs that cross genre lines to serve the spirit of each tale he weaves and engage his audiences in deep and meaningful ways. Shad’s latest release Porcelain Angel is being lauded for its “grace and elegance” (Americana UK), “all–knowing tonality” (Americana Highways), and for “pushing the boundaries of musical storytelling” (The Rogovoy Report).

Richard Lander has a deep personal connection to the Civil War as the great-grandson of John R. Lander, a Union soldier. John emigrated from Germany and enlisted with an Illinois regiment at the age of fourteen, serving for the duration of the war. Members of the Lander family have continuously studied the Civil War and maintained membership in the Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War. In his presentation, Richard will detail the complex tapestry of events that led to the conflict, covering the cultural, political, economic, and military factors at play. Attendees are encouraged to note the striking parallels between the historical facts and current events.
The Summit Area Old Guard is a social, educational, and recreational fellowship of active men of retirement age, founded in 1930. We hear presentations most Tuesday mornings in an auditorium in New Providence, and we have many other activities including discussion groups, sports groups, and celebrations. Our dues are minimal, and members volunteer for all aspects of the operation. Our motto is "Come for the programs. Stay for the friends." Guests are always welcome to attend and to learn about our organization.

The Apollo space program was an outstanding 20th Century achievement, but many of its difficulties and successes have faded into obscurity. Dr. Dean Eppler, a retired NASA scientist with over 35 years in human spaceflight, possesses the breadth of experience to bring the mission into focus. His background includes Apollo program history, advanced space suit engineering, International Space Station development, and selecting and training astronauts (1990, 1996, 1998). Dr. Eppler will identify the key accomplishments of the mission and discuss Apollo’s enduring contributions to human spaceflight.

Howard Meyer is a long-time leader in New Jersey volunteer Emergency Medical Services (EMS). He is the past president of the EMS Council of New Jersey, the country's largest volunteer squad association; and he served as its volunteer legislative director for over 20 years. Since 1971, he has served in leadership roles, including president and chief, in all types of New Jersey environments—rural, suburban, and urban. Meyer will cover key events in the evolution of the EMS volunteer system, highlighting its critical importance, and the challenges now faced by volunteer squads.

The Forgotten Victory Trail explores one of America's most overlooked Revolutionary War campaigns. Burning towns, secret networks, and fierce local resistance in New Jersey helped turn the tide. The battles of Springfield and Connecticut Farms in June, 1780 were critical in the defense of New Jersey and Washington’s forces (in Morristown), and in the weakening of the British armies ahead of the Battle of Yorktown. Our speaker will be Bob Gula, whose qualifications include Education Officer, West Fields Chapter of Sons of the American Revolution; Patriotic Instructor, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War; and Member, General Society of Mayflower Descendants.
