Man Charged With Attempted Murder After Shooting Teen: Prosecutor

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — A man was charged with attempted murder after he shot a teenager who broke into his and other vehicles in Garfield early Tuesday morning, acting Bergen County Prosecutor Dennis Calo announced.

Omar Smadiya, 37, was also charged with possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and possession of a high-capacity magazine, Calo said.

Christopher Manon-Velez, the 19-year-old who was shot, was charged with burglary to a motor vehicle. (See related: 19-Year-Old Shot In Garfield, Suspect In Custody: Prosecutor)

Garfield Police received a report at about 3:26 a.m. that a victim was shot near 25 Farnham Ave., Calo said.

Manon-Velez burglarized several vehicles near Farnham Avenue before he was shot, including one Smadiya owns, Calo said.

Authorities found Manon-Velez, of Passaic, inside a nearby McDonald's with a gunshot wound to his back. He was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center where he was treated and is in stable condition, Calo said.

Smadiya and Manon-Velez were arrested Tuesday. They are both due in Central Judicial Processing Court later on this month.
