Project to Reduce Power Outages Set to Begin in Teaneck, Bergenfield

Traffic disruptions possible as utility company begins infrastructure work.

Underground utility work part of a project to service in the Teaneck-area is expected to begin Thursday in the township, according to Public Service Electric and Gas.

In March, Teaneck’s zoning board approved the its electricity substation on the Bergenfield border, off Meyer Court. As part of the work, PSE&G is upgrading and relocating underground electric transmission and distribution circuits from the substation.

“The underground electric transmission and distribution construction will include work on public roadways in Teaneck and Bergenfield,” a company statement said. “As part of the project, approximately 1 mile of transmission circuit will be relocated and supporting distribution lines will be installed.”

No service interruptions or major road closures are planned, PSE&G said. Some lane closures are possible as the project progresses through September.

Occasional 24-hour work and weekend work is possible, but the utility said it had scheduled extended work hours Monday through Friday.

“Motorists may want to travel an alternate route until the work is completed,” the statement said. “Interruptions will be kept to a minimum, and PSE&G regrets any inconvenience the project may cause.”

Anticipated work locations are:

  • Court Street, Palisade Avenue and Meyer Court in Teaneck
  • West Main Street at South Front Street in Bergenfield.

The Bergenfield work is likely to begin July 16, PSE&G said.

The substation project, behind O. DiBella Music, will expand the facilities capacity and is a critical component in the utility’s efforts to limit outages in the area, company officials have said. Work on the Teaneck substation, near the Richard Rodda Community Center, is also planned.

The project is part of $3.5 billion in infrastructure upgrades PSE&G is making around New Jersey, the company said.
