Shalom Academy Eyes Temporary Locations in Englewood, Report Says

Zoning hearing rescheduled past state deadline for charter school approvals.

A Hebrew immersion charter school seeking approval to open in Teaneck is negotiating with two property owners in Englewood to provide temporary space allowing the school to open this fall, according to a report on northjersey.com.

Shalom Academy Charter School Thursday, but the hearing was moved to July 19, four days after the state is set to announce which charters are approved to open.

“We have some other locations and some alternative plans that we are excited about,” the school’s education consultant, Valarie Smith, said in the report. The Englewood locations are already zoned for educational use and would not require city zoning board approval.

The potential temporary locations in Englewood were not disclosed, but the school would like to end up in the Teaneck location, according to the report.

Shalom Academy Charter School to open the school on the second floor of 125 Galway Place. The school is seeking parking and use variances for the Galway Place location.

According to state charter school regulations, a school must submit a lease, mortgage or title to its facility and certificate of occupancy for educational use. Information must be submitted by June 30 as part of the “preparedness review process.”

In an interview last week, Smith called the Galway Place site a “terrific location.”

The school recently led parents on a tour of the Galway Place location, she said.

All of the school’s 160 seats are filed and some have waiting lists, Smith said. The school has hired 19 teaching staffers and a principal. Smith could not say how many students were from Teaneck or Englewood.

The school is currently seeking to open on the second floor the Galway Place industrial site, but would consider expanding in the space, she said.

Last year, the in Englewood but could not provide a certificate of occupancy by the state’s deadline.
