Teaneck Man Charged in Car Break-In Attempt at Englewood Hospital

Englewood has seen about 20 vehicle burglaries or attempts since June, police say.

A 35-year-old Teaneck man was caught trying to break into a BMW at the Englewood hospital parking deck late Monday, city police said.

Police arrested Jermein Russell after a hospital employee spotted him trying to enter the car around 11:30 p.m., according to Englewood Detective Lt. Timothy Torell. The city has seen about 20 car break-ins and attempts since June and police warned residents to take precautions.

"The public needs to understand that, in most cases, vehicle burglaries are crimes of opportunity. People are forever leaving valuables such as ipods, laptops, cash, jewelry, backpacks, etc. in plainview for criminals to see as they creep around a neighborhood,” Torell said in a statement. “Often the vehicles are even left unlocked."
