UPDATE: Route 17 Lanes to Reopen Thursday

Police say two lanes were shut on Route 17 south beginning Tuesday morning for emergency work to repair a collapsed sewer main pipe.

Two lanes of Route 17 southbound closed for sewer repairs in the Hasbrouck Heights area will reopen Thursday morning, officials said. 

The “fast” lane and middle lane in the area of  and the have been closed since Tuesday morning for emergency work to replace a sewer main pipe that had collapsed underneath the roadway. Traffic is being diverted on to the right lane and shoulder in the meantime.

Borough Engineer Ken Job told Patch it was hoped the roadway could be reopened by Wednesday evening but more time will be needed for materials to set before the roadway can be repaved.

The repaving will be done overnight and the lanes should be reopened by 6 a.m. Thursday, Job said.

In recent weeks inspection by the borough engineer and the DPW superintendent had found significant settlement above the pipe and bulging of the roadway was visible indicated the piped had collapsed. It was said that in order to avoid major problems for the businesses in the area of Route 17 south.
