Authorities Respond to Two Fires This Week

A kitchen fire and vehicle fire were reported in Toms River this week

No injuries were reported as authorities responded to a kitchen fire and vehicle fire this week, according to police.

A portion of a Holiday City home's kitchen was damaged in a Tuesday afternoon fire. A Mount Matterhorn Lane resident was cooking French fries on her stove when it became too hot and ignited a kitchen fire, according to Chief of Police Michael Mastronardy.

The woman, 69-year-old Suvetta Bivins, attempted to extinguish the fire with water, but that caused flames to grow. Bivins then used a fire extinguisher to put out the blaze, which caused damage to the stove, microwave, walls and kitchen, Mastronardy said.

The Toms River Bureau of Fire prevention responded to inspect the residence and Bivins refused medical attention, according to the chief.

Toms River police and the Toms River Fire Company responded to the scene just after 8:30 a.m. When Officer Robert O'Neill arrived, the vehicle, which was in the street, was fully involved, Mastronardy said.

The blaze was brought under control within 10 minutes by firefighters and no injuries were reported, according to the chief.
