1 Killed As Multiple People Struck By Lightning In Jackson

JACKSON, NJ — One man was killed and 13 others were injured Wednesday night when lightning struck at an outdoor archery range in Jackson, police said.

The victims of the lightning strike range from 7 to 61 years old, Jackson Police Chief Matthew Kunz said.

The 61-year-old man died as a result of his injuries, Kunz said.

The others were taken to various hospitals with injuries ranging from burns to non-specific complaints of not feeling well, he said. One other person was unconscious initially but regained consciousness, he said.

The lightning strike was reported to Jackson police at 7:13 p.m. at the Black Knight Bowbenders range on Perrineville Road, he said.

A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for the area shortly afterward by the National Weather Service.

Emergency medical services from Jackson, Toms River, Howell, Plumsted, Freehold Township, and Millstone along with Hatzolah of Central Jersey responded, as well as paramedics from RW Barnabas Health System and Atlantic Health Systems.

Also responding were the Cassville Volunteer Fire Company and Jackson Fire District 2, he said.
