PHOTOS: Sandy's Impact Still Visible in Green Island
Many homes in Green Island, while still standing, experienced devastating flooding
Five months after Superstorm Sandy, the storm's impact remains visible in Toms River's Green Island section.
A storm surge from Sandy pushed bay waters into many homes, leaving residents questioning whether they should raise their homes or wait to rebuild as FEMA may update its flood maps.
At first glance, Green Island homes for the most part appear habitable — but it's the inside that matters, as many homes needed to be gutted because of water damage. Temporary storage trailers sit in fronts of many homes in the area, as residents complete repairs.

"It's like two different neighborhoods...the before and after," he said.
A YouTube video, posted by user Paul Gaurino and featured here, shows the immediate aftermath of Sandy in Green Island as bay waters churn in the streets. Once the water recedes, streets were covered in dirt and debris. Authorities kept residents away from their properties for about a week following the storm.
