Sheds Destroyed, Firefighter Injured in Brookside Drive Blaze

A fire that broke out Saturday night burnt down three sheds and resulted in an injury to one Toms River firefighter.

The fire occurred at 595 Brookside Drive at 6:50 p.m. Saturday, and was extinguished by firefighters from Toms River Fire Companies 1 and 2, said James Mercready, Director of Toms River Fire Prevention.

Along with the three sheds being consumed in the fire, an area of brush measuring approximately 50 feet by 50 feet was also consumed, Mercready said. One firefighter suffered an ankle injury battling the blaze, and was treated and released at Community Medical Center.

The flames were ultimately doused and extinguished under the direction of Chief Ed Storino of Toms River Fire Company No. 2, however there was some fire damage to the dwelling located on the property from radiant heat, said Mercready.

Township fire officials are investigating the fire, the cause of which has not yet been determined. They are reminding residents that, with cold weather having arrived, homeowners should check their smoke and carbon monoxide alarms for proper operation.

"When using fireplaces and wood-burning stoves, make sure that any ashes are placed in a metal container with a tight-fitting lid," said Mercready. "The ashes should be soaked with water and kept away from anything combustible."
