Summons Issued in Toms River Crash That Seriously Injured Three

Pickup truck crashed into BMW sedan while turning onto the roadway

Three people were taken to a trauma center Thursday afternoon as a result of an accident on Fischer Boulevard near the intersection with Monty Road.

The 3:22 p.m. accident occurred, police said, when Allen Mullen, 76, of Longpoint Drive in Toms River was exiting 1001 Fischer Boulevard in his 2009 Ford F150 and crashed into a 2003 BMW sedan while turning left.

The BMW was being driven by Elysa Caldwell, 25, of Sleepy Hollow Road who had two siblings, ages 14 and 16, in the vehicle with her, police spokesman Ralph Stocco said. The impact of the accident, he said, forced the BMW to veer into oncoming traffic and strike a 1999 Ford Taurus head on. The Taurus was being driven by Thomas Sharkey, 45, of Wilson Avenue in Toms River.

Caldwell, the BMW driver, was taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center along with her two siblings. Caldwell and the 14-year-old sibling were taken by ambulance to the hospital while the 16-year-old was taken by medevac helicopter, Stocco said.

Mullen, the F150 driver, was issued a traffic summons for careless driving, Stocco said.
