Toms River Man, 23, Arrested for Shoplifting Groceries

Local man also had a warrant from a previous shoplifting complaint

A Toms River man was arrested for shoplifting more than $100 worth of items from the township's Pathmark supermarket on Sunday.

Corey Smith, 23, was charged after another customer at the store alerted the manager that a suspect walked out with a carriage filled with groceries and was loading them in a vehicle around 9 a.m., Chief Michael Mastronardy said.

Corporal Steven Austin responded to the store and conducted an investigation that ultimately led to the charges. Smith was arrested when he returned to his residence on Walchest Drive where the proceeds of the shoplifting were recovered, said Mastronardy. The value of the groceries was found to be $118.

Smith was also arrested on an outstanding warrant from the Toms River Municipal Court for $776 for a previous shoplifting complaint.
