Toms River's ADA Committee Seeking New Members
Committee advises the mayor's office on Americans with Disabilities Act compliance

The committee that advises Toms River on Americans with Disabilities Act compliance is seeking new members.
What should be a nine-member body that ensures Toms River complies with ADA regulations is currently two voting members short. Members said during a Monday night meeting that they plan to have a full committee when 2014 begins.
"At a minimum we need to identify two individuals," said committee Chairman James Sigurdson, who tasked each member to find one potential recruit before the next meeting in September.

Applicants must be residents of Toms River, Sigurdson said. They should also be living with a disability, a caregiver of a disabled individual, or a concerned member of the public.
"We hope to further awareness in the Toms River community among the individuals we are looking to advocate for and serve," Sigurdson said.

The committee typically meets quarterly, though it may meet up to five times per year if scheduling permits. Meetings begin at 7 p.m. in town hall and are scheduled to end at 8:30 p.m., according to Sigurdson.
Residents interested in joining can find more information on the committee's website or can call 732-341-1000, ext. 8417.
The committee dates back to 1992, when it was established by township ordinance to comply with the federal ADA law passed in 1990. In 1997, Toms River's committee was declared a legal township entity.
Throughout the years, the committee has helped to make improvements to handicapped parking, ramps and bathrooms at township facilities.
Members announced Monday that the committee raised over $1,100 was raised at the Toms River Food Fest on Saturday. Looking forward, the committee plans to focus on a public awareness campaign encouraging thoughtfulness about ADA situations, including reserving handicapped parking spots only for those with proper credentials.
