Aggravated Assaults Raise Violent Crimes in Bloomingdale in 2011

The New Jersey State Police Uniform Crime Report showed violent crimes increased in the Borough of Bloomingdale between 2010 and 2011, including with a single murder.

According to the report, released last week, the number of violent crimes grew from five cases to 13. The largest increase within the violent crimes category was in the number of aggravated assault cases, which grew from four to 12. Non-violent crimes decreased in all categories except motor vehicle thefts.

Bloomingdale's Crime Index Total increased from 65 to 69 in 2011.

The information collected by state police is based on a 2010 estimated population of 7,656 people and a borough area of 8.74 square miles. Bloomingdale is classified as a "suburban" community by state police.

The report also shows a three percent rise in overall crime, mostly in nonviolent crime, throughout the state. Nonviolent crimes are classified as burglary, larceny and motor vehicle theft.

Violent crimes, which are classified as murder, rape, robbery and aggravated assault, stayed the same statewide, according to New Jersey Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa.
