Earthquake Jiggles Morris County Towns Thursday Night
USGS confirms 1.6-magnitude quake just after 8 p.m.
BUTLER, N.J. – Residents in the northeastern section of Morris County ended Thursday with questions and anxiety after a minor earthquake rattled the area.
According to the United States Geological Service, a 1.6-magnitude earthquake rattled Butler Township and surrounding areas, enough for homes to shake but not cause any damage.
The excitement occurred at 8:16 p.m. and originated two miles below the earth’s surface.

Once Butler Police confirmed it was investigating and subsequently stating it was indeed an earthquake, the department’s Facebook page was loaded with resident’s comments.
Some residents claimed their homes didn’t shake but they heard a “boom,” with others said they felt two different sets of shaking.
