Good Samaritan Fell Through Ice Rescuing Dog, Kinnelon Police Say

The man was trying to rescue another walker's dog from the ice when he fell in himself.

KINNELON, NJ — A good Samaritan had to be rescued from a frozen lake after trying to rescue another walker's dog, who had also fallen in, Kinnelon police said.

A local resident was walking their dog near Fayson Lake Wednesday morning when the dog ran onto the frozen lake to chase some wildlife and fell into the icy water, police said.

A 59-year-old man heard the dog's owner yelling for help and sprang into action attempting to rescue the dog. The man also fell into the lake about 30 yards from the shoreline, police said.

Kinnelon Lieutenant Napoletano crawled across the ice to pull the man out of the lake. Once they'd both reached the shoreline, Napoletano crawled across the ice again to rescue the dog.

Both the man and the dog were safe, police said, but the victims wished to remain anonymous.
