N.J. Ballet's Performance a Holiday Tradition

This weekend, we're introducing a new feature that we hope will make your downtime even better.

We know you've been there before, because we have, too. Whether you're trying to avoid another lazy Saturday or Sunday on the couch, or you are so busy that you haven't had a chance to find out that the event you've been waiting for all year is happening this weekend, this feature is for you.

So, without further interruption, we bring you the first 5 Things to Do This Weekend. You'll find this first edition to be very holiday oriented. More information about the events, along with addresses for the venues, can be found by clicking the links.

1. The New Jersey Ballet's Nutcracker—There are four different opportunities this weekend to see this performance, celebrating its 40th year, at the Community Theater at Mayo Center for the Performing Arts in Morristown. On Saturday and Sunday, you can see shows at 1 and 6 p.m. However, the 1 p.m. Sunday show is listed as sold out on the venue's website. That site promises attendees "eye-popping special effects, a live orchestra and a touch of holiday magic." If you haven't seen this holiday classic, here's your chance. Ticket prices vary, and you can purchase them online here.
2. A Christmas Carol—This musical adaptation of Charles Dickens' work is being performed at the Chatham Playhouse by the Chatham Community Players. You can see performances from Friday through Saturday. Friday's performance is at 8 p.m., while you can see a production at both 3 and 8 p.m. on Saturday. Sunday's production is at 3 p.m. Adult tickets are $25 and youths and seniors can get theirs for $23.
3. Festive Christmas Concert—The New Philharmonic of New Jersey and the Choirs of St. Peter's Episcopal Church are presenting a concert at the church in Morristown on Saturday night. The performance will begin at 7 p.m. and is expected to end at about 8:30 p.m. General admission tickets are $25 and children and students can get in for $10. They can be purchased at the door or in advance.
4. Holiday Drop & Shop—If you still have holiday shopping to take care of and just can't see yourself running around with your young children, the Madison Elks Lodge is here to save the day. Parents can leave children ages 3 to 10 at the lodge with trained teenage scouts while shopping in Madison and around the area. The fee is $20 per child and children will be able to watch holiday movies, take part in arts and crafts projects, and enjoy games and snacks.
5. Pictures with Santa for Charity—Want a photo of your children—or yourself—with Santa and also want to do so while helping those less fortunate? Hoffman's Supply True Value in Long Valley is hosting just that type of event. On Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., you can make a $5 donation and have a photo taken with the big guy. Proceeds help the Interfaith Community Outreach of Washington Township Association. The event's listing says Hoffman's "adopts" local families within the community to help give them a happy holiday. Girl Scout Troop 1661 will also be collecting new unwrapped toys at the event.
