At about 8:56 PM Riverdale Police located an abandoned vehicle that was reported on the ramp from Route 287 North to Route 23 South. A six pack of Coors Light with three beers missing sat on the back seat of the gray Ford pick-up alone. Then, the driver walked up to the Ford with a gas can. The 48-year-old out of Pompton Plains claimed he had run out of gas and so hitched a ride from someone passing by. The police smelled alcohol on his breath. The man was also swaying. So the police gave him field sobriety tests and then took him into the station to administer an Alcotest exam. His reading was over three times the legal limit. At some point, the man became belligerent with officers. The Pompton Plains man was issued summonses for Driving While Intoxicated, Delaying Traffic, Hitchhiking, and Fail to Exhibit a License and was released with a September court date.
