WATCH: Driver Slams Into Pole On Route 46, Sparks Brush Fire

Driver suffered medical emergency and was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

It was like a scene out of a movie on Tuesday afternoon, when a driver crashed into a utility pole on Route 46 in Parsippany, snapping the wood and causing electrical line sparks above the intersection of New Road.

The crash, which occurred at 12:28 p.m., shut and detoured major roadways in Parsippany through much of the afternoon and night until repairs were made. Local police did not announce road openings until nearly 6 a.m. Wednesday.

The driver, a 45-year-old man from Lake Hiawatha, was assisted from his vehicle by a retired Parsippany Police Officer and two Fairfield Township Police Detectives, and first aid was immediately given to the driver, Officer Brian Conover said.

Parsippany EMS arrived on scene and transported the driver to Morristown Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, Conover said.

Parsippany’s Fire District No. 5 arrived on scene to extinguish a small brush fire caused by the downed wires, Conover said.

Repairs to the downed utility pole were completed just before 5 a.m.

The driver was heading eastbound on Route 46 in the right lane when he suffered a medical emergency, Conover said. He was not issued a summons.

The video shows the driver enter the frame from the left side around the 18-second mark.
