James Gandolfini's Lesser Known Role: Restaurant Owner

"Sopranos" star partnered with Cedar Grove resident to open Del Monico.

Actor James Gandolfini, who died of an apparent heart attack Wednesday at the age of 51, was best known for his role as mob boss Tony Soprano on the “Sopranos.”

Gandolfini also played a small role as a business partner at the popular Cedar Grove restaurant, Del Monico, which he opened with his friend Bobby Wong of Tao, Tina Louise and The Village Gourmet.

Wong and Gandolfini became fast friends several years ago and the restaurateur catered the star's wedding at Studio 440 before the two decided to go into business.

Del Monico is known for offering "steak and beyond," and Gandolfini reportedly ordered the 44 oz. ribeye served on the bone at the eatery's grand opening.

“Every time he’s back in the area, he dines at DelMonico,” Wong told Patch in 2012. “One night he jumped behind the bar and tended bar for a while.”

Wong, a resident of Cedar Grove, told Patch the two were friends who would go boating together and spend weekends at the Jersey Shore.

Wong was not immediately available for comment Wednesday.
