Lauryn Hill Admits She Failed to Pay Taxes

Singer , a South Orange resident, admitted in federal court in Newark Friday she failed to pay income taxes on nearly $2 million worth of income between 2005 and 2007. 

Hill, best known for her work with Wyclef Jean in the Fugees, pleaded guilty to tax evasion, said U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman. The maximum penalty for each charge is one year in prison plus fines and court costs.

No Stowaways Found on Ship, Search Ended

The search for suspected stowaways within a cargo container aboard a ship docked at Port Newark has been ended with no one found, the US Department of Homeland Security announced Thursday morning.

"After a lengthy and exhaustive inspection by the Department of Homeland Security officials, the search for stowaways aboard the Ville D'Aquarius has concluded with no stowaways found," DHS said in a statement released Thursday.

Man Plays Historic Two Hole-In-One Round

A West Caldwell man made golf history Saturday when he made two hole-in-ones in the same round at the Donald Ross course at Mountain Ridge Country Club.

Errol Cook, 73, a retired financial executive and Mountain Ridge member for 35 years, has played golf most of his life, but never hit a hole-in-one until acing both the 14th and 16th holes (both par-threes) within about 15 minutes.

Spain Wins on Penalties, Advances to Finals

Despite a heartbreaking loss for Portugal, Spain's penalty shootout victory Wednesday in the Euro 2012 semifinals was still a cause for celebration in Newark's Ironbound community.

Fans from both sides of the Peninsular War poured onto Ferry Street shortly after Spain ousted Portugal, 4-2, in penalty kicks following 90 minutes of regulation and 30 minutes of overtime.

Tyrone Gadsden, 48, of Roselle, was wearing an orange vest and white hard hat when he arrived at a North Hillside Avenue home in Livingston, where he bound a woman in the house with duct tape then ransacked the house before punching the woman in the face and fleeing.

Gadsden eluded the Livingston Police Department, but their West Orange counterparts pulled Gadsden over around 10 minutes later.

Northfield Avenue Gets a Facelift

Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo Jr. announced a 6.5-mile Northfield Avenue facelift project at the Codey Arena on Tuesday, June 26. The project began about two weeks ago with parts of Northfield Avenue in West Orange near the I-280 exit already paved. 

The project, which costs $2.5 million, is being done as part of the county’s Roadway Resurfacing Program for 2012.

Livingston Cop Delivers Baby While On-Duty

A little after 9 a.m. on Wednesday, Livingston police officer David Naylor, a 12-year police veteran, was dispatched to a house on Vista Terrace because a woman’s water broke and she was going into labor. But when he walked in the front door, the scene was “pure chaos.”
As Naylor started calming everyone down, the mother realized that she wasn’t going to be able to wait.
A short while later, the mother delivered a healthy baby boy.

South Orange VP Opposes Bill To Exempt Private Seton Hall from Local Land Use Law

Village President Alex Torpey is among 11 mayors in New Jersey who have signed a letter opposing NJ Senate Bill S-1534, which would exempt private colleges and universities from the provisions of the municipal land use law.
