What's Going on at Temple Sholom of West Essex?

Events, activities, trips all taking place at temple in next few weeks.

It will be a busy Spring at Temple Sholom of West Essex in Cedar Grove. The congregation has planned the following events and activities:

The temple will commemorate Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day, on Friday evening, April 20 , at 6:30 p.m.

At that time, the temple will engage in an act of legacy perpetuation. During the service, a special mantle will be dedicated to a Holocaust Torah Scroll from Czechoslovakia.

Congregant Peter Layne has worked to recreate the original Torah mantle from the Torah for the occasion. 

The congregation’s ongoing program to restore a letter in the Holocaust scroll is also continuing.

Scribal sessions will take place on Sunday, April 29 and Sunday, May 20. Timeslots are now available by calling the office for a donation form. The minimum donation is $72 for two writers.

Pianist Evan Mitchell will present a free piano recital featuring Liszt’s “Sonata in B minor” on Sunday, April 15 beginning at 2 p.m.

The recital is being sponsored by Dr. Lynne B. Harrison.

On Saturday, April 21, Ruth Frankel will lead a discussion on Peter Manseau’s book, “Songs for the Butcher’s Daughter” at the temple.


The discussion, beginning at 10:45 a.m., will feature questions about the book to enliven the discussion.

Coffee and cookies will be provided.

On Thursday, May 17, the temple will offer a trip to New York City’s Jewish Museum.

The bus leaves the temple at 9:30 a.m. and will feature a tour of specially chosen exhibits led by docents at the museum.

Sunday, April 29 is the first day for dropping off items for the temple’s Spring Rummage sale on Sunday, May 6.

Other drop off dates include Monday, April 30, Tuesday, May 1 and Wednesday, May 2.

The Temple Sholom of West Essex Israel family trip with Rabbi Groffman will take place on July 18-28 2013.

There will be a no obligation informational meeting to learn more about what the trip will be like at the temple on Monday, April 30 at 7:30 p.m.
