WALL, NJ — Back-to-school season isn't just a fresh start for youngsters. It's also an opportunity for Sunnyside Manor residents to go back to the classroom with One Day University classes - or “night school” as the residents call it.

At One Day University, residents can learn anything from “What Can Downton Abbey Teach Us About History?” to “The Last Days of the Dinosaurs,” Sunnyside owners say.

One Day University is a membership-based, streaming platform that offers live talks from some of the country’s most lively professors. Sunnyside Manor offers the programs for residents as part of its emphasis on cognitive health, owners say.

Each week, Sunnyside residents are given the opportunity to sit in on one of these classes to learn more about a particular topic.

“Streaming One Day University classes have been such an asset to our weekly offerings. It provides a way for residents to continue their education in the comfort of our home,” says MaryEllen Keane, co-owner of Sunnyside Manor.

So far, residents have learned about the musical life of George Gershwin, the history of broadcasting and understanding volcanos, just to name a few topics.

John F. Keane, Jr., co-owner of Sunnyside Manor explains more, “Lifelong learning is beneficial at every stage of life, including our senior years. There are so many cognitive health benefits, like enhancing brain health and improving memory, thinking, and reasoning skills.

"Plus, it’s just a fun way to learn about something you may not have had the access to during your school years.”

With such a great turn out, night school at Sunnyside will continue every Thursday night
all school year long.

Sunnyside Manor, which has been owned and managed by the Keane family for over 30 years, expanded and relocated to Ridgewood Road in Wall in 2015. Sunnyside has been providing care in the area for over 100 years.

The new Sunnyside Manor provides a continuum of care in three distinct neighborhoods: Independence ‘Plus’ Assisted Living, Recollections Memory Care and Skilled Nursing.
