It's Not Too Late to Get a Fresh-Killed Turkey for Thanksgiving
But you might have to make some calls or drive to find the bird of your dreams.

Most people who wanted a fresh-killed turkey have placed their orders. There's a good reason for it, according to the Goffle Road Poultry Farm in Wyckoff. They say a fresh-killed bird has to "tenderize" - or hang - a minimum of a day before it's cooked, or else the turkey might have a gamey taste.
But purveyors of fresh birds aren't all sold out, and they've taken care of the tenderizing by killing the bird in advance. The few places left selling fresh-killed birds might require you to make a trip, but if fresh-killed is your thing, you might want to check these places out:
- Wegmans, 724 Route 202 South, Bridgewater, 908-243-9600. Very few birds left, so if you're interested, you should be reading this on a mobile device as you're driving to the store.
- Lee Turkey Farm, 201 Hickory Corner Road, East Windsor, 609-448-0629. The farm incredibly still has fresh-killed birds for sale, all the way through Wednesday. It's first come, first serve at this point, so give them a call and hear a thorough message that will answer your every question (and gas up the car for the drive!)
- Williams-Sonoma (online). OK, it's a bit late for a Thanksgiving Day delivery, but the high-end retailer offers entire fresh-killed bird dinners shipped to your home in time for the holidays. (You may want to put this on your list for the rest of the holiday entertaining you're going to do.)
