'Kindness, Compassion, Empathy' Among Warren Star Student's Strengths

WARREN, NJ — Star Students are found in classrooms, on concert and theater stages and at debate lecterns, and out in the community doing good things to make life better for all of us.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding kids to their neighbors.

How do you know the star local student?

She is a student of mine.

Why do you believe the star local student should be recognized?

Olivia is an outstanding student and classmate. While Olivia stands out among her peers academically, she is an exemplary human being. Olivia is the first to lend a kind, helping hand to all of her classmates as well as her teachers without ever being asked. As you can see from the picture, Olivia created and presented a slide show to help her classmates better understand and appreciate her cultural background and celebrate Chinese New Year. She is the ideal student. However, there is much more to Olivia. Kindness, compassion, and empathy are among her many strengths. Nicholas, Olivia’s younger brother is non-verbal, autistic. She spends a great deal of time with him, teaching him, working with him, and being a role model, all while being a loving sibling. Art and dance are passions of hers. She recently appeared in a production of The Nutcracker.

Olivia participates in our school's Gifted and Talented Program. She has taken her strengths to help plan a beautification project of our school’s courtyard. She has been utilizing her ability to collaborate well with anyone she is paired with to come up with a plan that the entire group feels satisfied with. Olivia has an artistic eye that she applies throughout her work. She has strong cultural roots and uses that to enrich and educate her classmates in a variety of ways. Earlier in the year she chose to highlight the award-winning author, Grace Lin, and showed her classmates the importance of embracing your heritage through Lin’s journey as an author. Olivia has a wonderful attitude approaching each project and puts her all that she has in everything she does.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star local student?

Olivia is well-rounded, motivated, and compassionate.
