Star Student: Samson Is 'Smart, Self-Motivated, Outgoing' In Warren

We all know students who excel in academic, fine arts or volunteer service. Here's one local resident who is having an impact in Warren.

(Heather Silver)

WARREN, NJ — Star Students are found in classrooms, on concert and theater stages and at debate lecterns, and out in the community doing good things to make life better for all of us.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize Star Students, and we’re working to tell the stories of these outstanding kids to their neighbors.

This submission comes from Heather Silver who nominated Samson of Warren. Silver is the mother to this 11th grader.

How do you know the star local student?

He is my son

Why do you believe the star local student should be recognized?

My son is not only smart (almost straight A’s), self-motivated, outgoing, excellent public speaker, good-looking (I’m told-regardless of my bias) and extremely driven to achieve his goals.

When he first got to high school, he attempted to start an archery team that they didn’t have. While not being an athlete, he did excel in this through elementary school. Sadly our middle school could not continue it. So in entering high school, he recruited his old coach, willing to work at the high school and began submitting proper documentation and information on his plans. The school was thrilled but I formed him that an ‘advisor’ would be needed. I stepped up for that. We then found that the coach would not receive a stipend for running the club and interest waned quickly. Let’s be honest, teachers want to be paid. This did not deter him.

While working a heavy part-time job and carrying a large course load at school, he continued to enjoy snowboarding, mountain biking and hiking-excellent ways to get outdoors and off screens. He brought the idea of a hiking/biking club to us and again has been going through the motions to get this going. His luck may be better now as my husband and I have skills in these areas and don’t care if we’re paid and are eligible to act as Advisors for the club.

We are awaiting approval and the Warren Township Recreation Commission has him already recruited to use this group to aid in township trail renovations so that they can use our own local trails, of which we have many, to hold their ‘meetings’. Fingers crossed this one passes.

Regardless, he has stepped up in our town in so many ways to this point that our town is thrilled to see his next big idea come to life. So are we!

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the star local student?

He loves kids! He babysits children of all ages and tutors math, primarily, along with general school organizational skill building that kids frequently lack for ages all the way through middle school. He loves to see them succeed and they take to him amazingly well. He has the patience of a saint here.

Congratulations on your achievements, and all of our best wishes to you in the future, Samson!
