Warren Schools' Summer Projects in Full Swing

Additional projects contemplated as state renews grants to offset costs.

Late at night, the rooftop of Woodland School glows, like a giant moon, as a team of workers tears up roofing material and lays down a fresh layer of sealing materials.

The nighttime work is part of a $1,225,000 roof replacement project approved by the Warren Township Board of Education in April.

Other summer projects underway in the schools include window replacement and improvements to the facade at Central School (a $600,000 project); and improvements to the grass field and playground at Woodland School ($73,322).

The board is looking ahead to other needed projects, and discussed seeking state grants to help support the work, after the Department of Education renewed its ROD (Regular Operating District) grants program providing 40 percent reimbursement for projects deemed necessary for education and school efficiency.

The Watchung Hills Regional Board of Education approved a $12.5 million referendum for September for a list of such repair and improvement projects, but chose to take the state's bond reimbursement grant program because of the total of the work.
