Berkeley Heights Residents to Vote on Secession

Look to leave Union County for Morris—but why not Somerset?

Come November, residents of Berkeley Heights might be firing a salvo over Union County's Fort Sumter, in a manner of speaking.

Like the attack that launched the Civil War and the secession of Southern states in 1861, the residents will be voting on a referendum to secede from Union County.

The referendum was approved at the June 25 Township Council meeting.

Township Mayor Joe Bruno argues that the county has mismanaged its budget, resulting in higher taxes for residents, and has failed to provide adequate services, according to a previous NJ.com report. The discussion on how the township might secede from Union County and join Morris County began at a council meeting in May.

Somerset County... always the bridesmaid, never the bride.

We'd like to offer some of the advantages to joining Somerset County to our Berkeley Heights neighbors. Oh, sure, Berkeley Heights would be an odd appendage to Somerset, but as neighbors, Watchung could serve as a gateway to the new community.

So, what do you think? What are some of the reasons to invite our neighbors in Berkeley Heights to turn their backs on Morris and Union counties and join us in Somerset? Add your thoughts in the comments below.
