39 Homeless, 1 Hospitalized After Fire Tears Through North Jersey Apartments
Officials said the three-alarm blaze was "rapidly extending" to nearby structures as firefighters arrived.
PASSAIC COUNTY, NJ — Nearly 40 residents have been left homeless, along with one person hospitalized, after a fire engulfed several multi-family homes in Paterson this week, according to officials.
On Wednesday morning, at approximately 3:30 a.m., firefighters were called to a fire on 12 and 14 Elm Street, two multi-family residences.
According to officials, the three-alarm blaze was located in the rear of the residences and was “rapidly extending" to surrounding buildings.

Paterson firefighters, as well as departments from neighboring municipalities, fought the fire for nearly two hours. It was officially extinguished just after 5 a.m.
As firefighters attempted to put out the flames, two fire apparatus were placed out of service due to mechanical issues, officials added.

First responders worked "swiftly" to evacuate all affected residents, according to officials.
Authorities said that 39 people across three homes, 10, 12, and 14 Elm Street, were left homeless as a result of the blaze.
One person suffered from smoke inhalation and was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, according to officials.
Authorities added that five buildings were damaged as a result of the fire.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, according to Paterson officials.
The affected residents are receiving care from the American Red Cross, provided with temporary shelter, food, and essential supplies, officials said.
