After Teen Pedestrian Killed, NJ School Community Rallies For Family

"Bright spirit" Serenity Law, 15, was struck and killed by a car this weekend. A fundraiser will help her family.

CLIFTON, NJ — After a 15-year-old was struck and killed by a driver over the weekend, a North Jersey school community is coming together to support her family.

Family members and school officials identified Serenity Law as the pedestrian killed on Sunday night, after a collision in Ridgefield.

Officials said the teen was hit at the intersection of Shaler Boulevard and Edgewater Avenue at approximately 7:37 p.m. She was later pronounced dead at Hacksensack University Medial Center. Officials did not say if anyone has been charged in the collision.

Serenity attended Ridgefield Memorial High School, and is listed as a freshman on the varsity girl's basketball roster.

Her father Cordero Law works for Clifton Public Schools on the maintenance team, and fellow Clifton Schools community members set up a GoFundMe for the family to help with hospital bills and funeral expenses.

"Serenity's bright spirit illuminated the lives of those around her, and her untimely passing has left a profound void in the hearts of all who knew her," wrote the fundraiser's organizer.

The fundraiser organizers said the incident has "shaken our community to its core" and that other parents and employees are looking for ways to help Cordero and his family.

Donors have raised more than $23,000 as of Tuesday at 9 a.m., and wrote their condolences and prayers.

"Cordero has touched countless lives with his kindness, diligence, and unwavering commitment to our school community," the fundraiser states. "Now, as he navigates the overwhelming pain of losing his cherished daughter, we want to come together to offer our support in any way we can."

Clifton Schools Superintendent Danny A. Robertozzi also shared a link to the fundraiser, saying that "your support would mean the world to the Law family."
