TOTOWA, NJ — The discount grocery chain Lidl is planning to open a second Passaic County store in Totowa, a developer said.

Urban Edge Properties announced earlier this week that the German-based retailer will set up a 27,270-square-foot store in Totowa Commons, offering both groceries and a variety of household products.

Lidl will join other major retailers including The Home Depot, Staples, and Fortunoff Backyard Store in the Commons, the property owner said. The company's one Passaic County location is in Pompton Lakes Towne Square, and Lidl has 22 stores currently in New Jersey.

"Lidl is a popular and in-demand value grocer that brings a new use to Totowa Commons,” said Leigh Lyons, senior vice president of leasing for Urban Edge. “This is their second location in Passaic County, and we expect that it will increase regular traffic and visits to the center.”

There is no estimated date for the new store's opening yet.

As with fellow German company Aldi, many of the food options at Lidl are private-label and cost less than at bigger retailers. The store shelves items in the boxes they came in, and encourages customers to bring their own bags to keep overhead to a minimum.

Lidl is relatively newer than Aldi, with its first modern store open in 1973 whereas Aldi founded their first store in 1961. The company operates more than 12,000 stores and is active in 32 countries, with its U.S. headquarters established in Arlington County, Virginia in 2015.
