Man Broke Into Wayne Apartment, Sent Woman Photos Before Refusing To Leave: PD

SWAT team members and Wayne PD officers negotiated with the man for several hours Thursday before breaking in and arresting him.

WAYNE, NJ — A break-in at a Wayne apartment complex on Thursday turned into a multiple-hour standoff when the intruder refused to come out, officials said.

A resident of Lancaster Court Apartments told police that she was not at home, and the man had sent her photos showing that he was in her home, according to Wayne Police Detective Captain Dan Daly.

Patrol officers arrived to the apartments at around 1:40 p.m. to find the doors locked. Daly said they saw the man, identified as 38-year-old Hisham Obaid of Wayne, through a window and established contact with him on the phone.

Officers established a perimeter and tried to convince Obaid to come out; he said he would leave the apartment at one point, but stayed inside and stopped talking to police, Daly said in a statement.

Members of the Wayne Police Crisis Negotiations Unit and the Passaic County SWAT team also responded to the scene. Police used special technology to locate Obaid inside the apartment, and determined that he fell asleep inside the apartment, they told TAPinto Wayne.

Officers forced their way in through the back door and found Obaid "semi-conscious" on the floor, Daly said. Police also found drug paraphernalia nearby, and determined him to be under the influence of drugs. First responders took him to St. Joseph's Medical Center in Paterson.

Police charged Obaid with burglary, drug possession, and contempt of a court order, and he was transferred to the Passaic County Jail pending a hearing.
