Prosecutor's Office Investigating Fatal New Year's Eve Fire In Passaic
Officials have not yet released the name of the 50-year-old woman who died; another resident was hospitalized in critical condition.
PATERSON, NJ — The county prosecutor's office is investigating a fatal fire that broke out in a Passaic apartment building on New Year's Eve.
A 50-year-old woman was found dead inside one of the apartments at 361 Madison Street, and another resident was hospitalized with serious injuries. The fire broke out around 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday, and Passaic firefighters determined it started on the first floor of the building, officials said.
Officials have not released the woman's identity. A 66-year-old man who lived with the woman was listed in critical condition at Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, Mayor Hector Lora said on Tuesday.

Other residents of the three-story apartment building were evacuated, and the American Red Cross set up a shelter for them at a nearby school.
The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office and Passaic Police and Fire officials said they will release more information on the investigation as it becomes available.
