Car Show Founder From West Deptford Dies In Crash

A few years ago, Jay Hill bought a 1966 Chevy Nova, which later led him to create a weekly car show that united local auto enthusiasts.

WEST DEPTFORD, NJ — An auto enthusiast from West Deptford died after getting into a crash earlier this month in Gloucester County.

Jay Hill, 51, was a lifelong West Deptford resident. A few years ago, he purchased a 1966 Chevrolet Nova, igniting his passion for cars that led him to found a popular car show in Gloucester County.

After purchasing his Chevy Nova, Hill founded the the Mondays in Mantua Car Organization — a car show that has brought hundreds of people together on Monday nights throughout the summer.

Hill was driving his Chevy Nova when he crashed July 20 on Interstate 295 in Logan Township.

At 6:47 p.m., he lost directional control of his vehicle, which veered off the roadway, struck the guardrail and overturned, according to State Police. He succumbed to his injuries the next day.

The crash remains under investigation.

Hill had long been active in the community as a pageant dad, DJing various events, and coaching his daughters in West Deptford softball and basketball, according to his obituary.

He was also a certified handgun instructor and lifelong member of the National Rifle Association.

Earlier this week, Mantua officials presented Hill's family with a township proclamation in his honor. Hill's friends, visitors and local car enthusiasts shared in the moment.

"We are truly grateful for Mr. Hill's efforts and honor his life and the legacy he leaves within our community here in Mantua," said Mayor Bob Zimmerman.
