Man Fatally Stabbed Another Man At Apartment Complex In South Jersey: Prosecutor

Witnesses helped police find the suspect a short distance away, authorities said.

VINELAND, NJ — A man was arrested shortly after he fatally stabbed another man Monday morning at an apartment complex in Vineland, authorities said.

Police responded to a reported stabbing in progress around 10:30 a.m. at 771 S East Ave. At the scene, they found the victim in critical condition with multiple stab wounds, according to the Cumberland County Prosecutor's Office.

The victim — Ronald Shields, 67 — was flown to an Atlantic City hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly after, authorities said.

Through witness descriptions, police identified the suspect as Jayron Thomas, of East Avenue in Vineland. He was found a short distance away and arrested.

No other information about the incident was immediately available.

Thomas, 27, was charged with murder, weapons offenses and tampering with evidence. He will remain jailed at the Cumberland County Correctional Facility, pending the results of a future pretrial-detention hearing.

Thomas didn't have an attorney listed in online court records on Tuesday.
