WEST DEPTFORD, NJ — ShopRite of West Deptford has been cleared to expand by taking over the former Big Lots next door.

The supermarket will go from 89,000 square feet to 132,000 under a proposal the West Deptford Planning Board approved last month.

Under the plan, ShopRite will take over the space formerly occupied by Big Lots, which permanently closed after the company went bankrupt last year.

ShopRite Wine & Spirits will also be part of the store, effectively replacing the Super Buy Rite in the complex that closed last summer.

Renovations will also include a section for product demonstrations, a wider entrance and improvements to the parking lot.

ShopRite will also take over the space occupied by Great Clips, which will move to another part of the shopping center.

The timeline of the project remains unclear, but the store will remain open during construction.

West Deptford's grocery landscape is significantly changing, as Sprouts Farmers Market just opened in June. ShopRite and Sprouts are located about 1.5 miles apart on Mantua Pike.
