Witnesses Sought For Wrong-Way Crash That Killed 4 Teens In South Jersey: Police

Authorities asked for help from anyone who saw the crash or witnessed the striking vehicle driving the wrong way on the highway.

CARNEYS POINT, NJ — One day after a wrong-way crash that killed four teens on the New Jersey Turnpike in Salem County, authorities said Monday that they're seeking witnesses.

State Police urged members of the public to contact them if they saw the crash or witnessed a Dodge Ram pickup truck traveling in the wrong direction before it hit an SUV head-on, killing four people inside.

It remains unclear what caused the driver to allegedly travel the wrong way. No charges have been announced as of Monday morning.

The crash happened around 12:40 a.m. Sunday at milepost 1.3 on the New Jersey Turnpike South in Carneys Point, authorities said. The location is just ahead of the Delaware Memorial Bridge.

A Colorado man was driving northbound in the southbound lanes when his white 2021 Dodge Ram pickup truck struck a black Mazda CX-5 SUV head-on, according to State Police. After the initial crash, a southbound Freightliner tractor-trailer struck the Mazda, authorities said.

Four people inside the Mazda were killed, authorities said. State Police identified them as Yaakov Kilberg, 19, of Lakewood, who was driving; Aharon Lebovits and Shlomo Cohen, both 18, of Lakewood; and Chaim Grossman, 18, of Fallsburg, New York.

The Dodge driver — Christopher Neff, 41, of Westminster, Colorado — sustained "serious" injuries, according to State Police. His condition was not available.

The tractor-trailer driver was unhurt.
