BRAKES Group of Westfield wants to remind residents that October 7 is the annual ‘National Walk to School Day’.
“Please be extra cautious on the roads tomorrow, especially near the elementary schools, as there will be many more pedestrians than usual,” said Mary Camacho, Chair of BRAKES Group of Westfield
BRAKES GROUP is a pedestrian organization in town. BRAKES stands for Bikers, Runners And Kids are Entitled to Safety.

National Walk to School Day began as a one-day event organized by the Partnership for a Walkable America in 1997 as a way to bring awareness to the need for more ”walkable communities”.
It has since grown into an international event which has participants from over 40 countries around the world and had 4,783 participating schools throughout the United States in 2014, according to Walk Bike to School.

According to Walk Bike to School website:
“In the USA and Canada, International Walk to School Day galvanizes visibility for walking and bicycling to school. Over time, this event has been part of a movement for year-round safe routes to school and a celebration – with record breaking participation - each October.”
