WESTFIELD, NJ — The 20th annual Downtown Westfield 5K & Pizza Extravaganza, often dubbed the "Pizza Run," is back this summer.

The popular running event was on pause for the past two years, due to the pandemic. All runners who participate in this year's 5K will receive coupons for free pizza.

In 2019, various downtown restaurants supplied a total of 675 pies of pizza that were devoured by famished runners after the race.

This year's event will take place on Monday, July 18 and begin at 7 p.m. This is atypical from previous years, where the run would be held on a Wednesday. According to Downtown Westfield Corporation's executive director, Bob Zuckerman, this change was made to reduce adverse impacts on businesses.

Zuckerman said some merchants had complained that the run interfered with business operations. Since more businesses are closed on Mondays, Zuckerman said it made more sense to hold it then.

Awards will be given to the top three overall winners with the fastest times, for both men and women, as well as the top three Westfield finishers, male and female.

Besides the pizza coupons that will be given out, beverages will be provided by Westfield establishments. A DJ will also be present and random prize drawings will take place.

The first 500 people who register by May 23 will receive a tech shirt. You can register now at this link.

The race starts at East Broad Street & Central Ave, and the course goes through rolling and flat streets in the town, ending in downtown. Water stops will be placed throughout the route.

More information about the race can be found on the town's website.
