Union County Man Sentenced In 2023 Fatal Shooting

Joel Argueta of Elizabeth was sentenced on Friday to aggravated manslaughter.

ELIZABETH, NJ - An Elizabeth man was sentenced on Friday for his role in a fatal shooting that took place in 2023, Union County Prosecutor William A. Daniel, Elizabeth Police Director Earl Graves, and Elizabeth Police Chief Giacomo Sacca announced Wednesday.

Union County Superior Court Judge Anthony Parenti sentenced Joel Argueta to 23 years in State Prison for aggravated manslaughter, requiring him to serve 85 percent before being eligible for parole, pursuant to NERA (No Early Release Act).

On June 23, 2023 around 9:39 p.m., Elizabeth Police Officers responded to the area of Spring Street and 3rd Avenue where they found a man, David Guevara, who suffered gunshot wounds to the head, according to Union County Assistant Prosecutor Joseph Cho, who prosecuted the case.

Guevara was pronounced dead at the scene.

"I hope this sentence can provide some assurance to the victim and his family, as well as the community, that we will not tolerate these egregious offenses and will expend all of our efforts to bring offenders to justice," said Daniel. "I want to commend Assistant Prosecutor Joseph Cho, Detective Melvin Rogers, and Elizabeth Police Detectives Neptune Ambroise and Veronica Garcia on their hard work on this case disposition."
