Fanwood Police Officer, 35, Dies Following Extended Battle With Lymphoma

FANWOOD, NJ — The Fanwood community is mourning the death of decorated Police Officer Carlos Gonzalez, Jr., 35, of Scotch Plains, who died on Wednesday at JFK Medical Center in Edison after an extended battle with Lymphoma.

Gonzalez leaves behind his wife, Jessica Martin Gonzalez and his daughter, Olivia.

"He will be remembered for his joyful and kind personality, his love for his family, and never giving up. His daughter, Olivia, was the light of his life," according to a release from Fanwood.

Gonzalez earned his degree in Criminal Justice from Kean University.

He started his career in law enforcement 11 years ago with the Newark Police Department, where he served for six years before joining the Fanwood Police Department in 2020.

Gonzalez was a huge New York Mets and wrestling fan. He always enjoyed spending time with loved ones, barbecuing outside, and being adventurous with food.

He is also survived by his parents, Carlos and Sonia; his brother, Kevin and his wife Paola; and his grandmothers Julia and Luisa Gonzalez, many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

Visitation will be at Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Ave, Fanwood, on Monday, March 10, from 4 to 8 p.m. His funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Columba’s RC Church, 25 Thomas St., Newark on Tuesday, March 11, at 10:30 a.m. Cremation will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS). A GoFundMe has been set up to support Carlos's family during this difficult time.
