Flood Watch, Hazardous Weather Issued For Union County: NWS

Heavy rainfall on Tuesday may result in flash flooding across Union County, according to an advisory from the National Weather Service.

UNION COUNTY, NJ — The National Weather Service issued a flood watch for Union County until 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

One to three inches of rainfall are expected in the Union County area, which may result in flooding of urban and poor drainage areas, according to the NWS.

Widespread showers with possible thunderstorms are expected Tuesday. The rain showers could be heavy at times and could slowly move over the same areas, resulting in flash flooding, the NWS said.

Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations, according to the NWS.

The Passaic River in Chatham is current at around 3.43 feet of water and is expected to rise to about 3.7 feet on Tuesday, according to the NWS. The NWS considers a flood stage to be around 6 feet of water height.

The NWS also issued a "hazardous weather" outlook for the entire northeast region of New Jersey.

Here is Tuesday's forecast as of 9:45 a.m., according to the NWS:

Tuesday afternoon

Showers. The rain could be heavy at times. High near 75. Southeast wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between a half and three quarters of an inch possible.

Tuesday night

Showers likely. Cloudy, with a low around 65. Northeast wind 6 to 9 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.
