Heat Advisory, Air Quality Alert In Effect For Union County

Heat index values ranging from the upper 90s to near 100 degrees are expected, according to the National Weather Service.

UNION COUNTY, NJ — A Heat Advisory and an Air Quality Alert were issued in Union County as heat index values climb.

The Heat Advisory remains in effect for the county from 10 a.m. on Thursday through 8 p.m. on Friday. The Air Quality Alert is in effect from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. on Thursday.

Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses. And there will be limited relief from the heat overnight, with muggy conditions and low temperatures in the mid-70s.

  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Stay in an air-conditioned room
  • Stay out of the sun
  • Check up on relatives and neighbors
  • To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments
  • Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location
  • Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 911

Thursday: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2 p.m. Mostly sunny, with a high near 96. Heat index values as high as 99. West wind 5 to 9 mph.

Thursday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 74. Southwest wind around 6 mph becoming calm after midnight.

Friday: A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 2 p.m. Partly sunny, with a high near 92. Heat index values as high as 100. Calm wind becoming southeast around 6 mph in the afternoon.

Friday Night: A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 74. South wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening.

Saturday: A chance of showers and thunderstorms, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 2 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 91. Southwest wind 3 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

Saturday Night: Showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm before 2 a.m., then a chance of showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 73. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Sunday: A chance of showers, then showers and thunderstorms likely after 2 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 87. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent.
