Knife-Wielding Man Grabs Store Clerk, Demands Money In Union County: Police

LINDEN, NJ — A knife-wielding man was charged with robbery after police say he grabbed a supermarket clerk and demanded money in Linden.

Nigel Cummings, 29, of Roselle, is charged with first-degree robbery, fourth-degree possession of a weapon, and third-degree possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

At around 2:30 p.m. on May 15, a suspect, later identified as Cummings, walked behind the counter at the New Way Supermarket, 816 E. St. George Ave., said Linden Police Captain Christopher Guenther.

While holding a knife in one hand, Cummings allegedly grabbed the clerk and demanded money from the register, said Guenther.

The clerk was not injured during the incident.

An investigation by the Linden Police Detective Bureau identified Cummings as the suspect.

Cummings was arrested on May 30 in Upper Merion, PA. He is being held in the Montgomery County Jail pending extradition to New Jersey.

"As we have repeatedly demonstrated, violence and lawlessness will never be tolerated here in Linden," said Police Chief David Hart. "I want to thank the Officers and Detectives involved in this case for their diligent work to identify the defendant, along with our law enforcement partners who took him into custody."
