Man Killed in Short Hills Carjacking Was Former Westfield Lawyer

Dustin Friedland, 30, was shot and killed during a carjacking on Sunday.

The man shot and killed during a carjacking outside The Mall at Short Hills last Sunday was identified as a Hoboken attorney, Dustin Friedland.

Friedland, 30, was previously a lawyer at the Westfield law firm, Learner David Littenberg Krumholz & Mentlik.

Michael Teschner of the firm said that everyone was very upset when they heard what had happened, according to The Alternative Press.

“He was a very sweet kid. Everybody was broken up,” Teschner told The Alternative Press.

Friedland was shot in the head when he and his wife returned to their SUV shortly after 9 p.m. on Sunday, the prosecutor's office said. He was pronounced dead at 11:45 p.m. the same night at Morristown Medical Center. His wife, Jamie, was not injured but also transported to the hospital, the prosecutor's office said.

Taubman Co., which owns the mall, offered a $20,000 reward Tuesday for the capture and conviction of the carjackers, according to NJ.com. The reward was added to the initial $10,000 offering from the Essex County CrimeStoppers Program. The program added an additional $10,000 on Tuesday, while the Morris County Crime Stoppers provided an additional $1,000, bringing the total reward to $41,000.
